The hardest thing in life is cultivating a new pattern of thought. Most of you, I’m sure, have had incredible heart opening experiences over the past 9 days while remembering to stop and be grateful; remembering to stop and notice how wonderful everything already is in a given moment; or simply remembering to stop.
But for the long lasting, mundane miraculous changes to occur we need continuity. We need to continuously remind ourselves that there is plenty to be grateful for. We need to continuously be mindful of the grace we are blessed with. It is only then, that we will develop a long lasting peaceful and happy relationship with life.
Remember that what we are trying to do here is really radical. It goes against each and every tendency we have – to dwell towards negativity, to see what we don’t have, to be continuously on the the move. We must acknowledge how hard it is and we must respect our courage and determination to break through our patterns and our heritage.
Don’t worry if you forget. Even if you have forgotten for a week. It’s OK. Don’t give yourself a hard time – blaming or putting ourselves down is irrelevant. Just pick it up from the moment you remember and be grateful for remembering.
So, if the daily gratitude journal gets on your nerves, let it go. If the 100 gratitude list overwhelms you, ignore it. The only important thing is to develop a mental attitude of stopping and appreciating what is. So please continue to stop and reflect on your good fortune. Eventually, it will become your nature, your identity because “neurons that fire together wire together”. We are still at a point where we need to assist that change. So continue to stop. Don’t stop stopping…..
